Fishy Business

Consumers are often concerned with where their food comes from but what about what their food actually is?

Under the current FDA rules, a single fish species can have multiple names from the time it is caught, to the time it ends up on your plate, which means that when you order a grouper, you could be eating one of 64 different species.

Advocacy groups such as Ocean are calling for more distinct labeling to protect vulnerable or endangered species of fish. Others aren’t so sure, stating that most consumers wouldn’t care and that most “fishy” business happens intentionally, not due to name confusion.
