A High Protein Diet Is Not for Everyone

A high protein diet is often promoted as a means of weight loss but is it safe for everyone?

A recent study of older adults who were already deemed to be at higher risk of heart disease following a high-protein diet actually led to a higher incidence of weight gain, heart disease, and death rates.

Although the relationship wasn’t proven to be cause and effect, increased protein intake can be cited as the cause for kidney disease and potentially negative changes in metabolism in this population.

Interestingly, it also noted that replacing dietary fat for protein increased the risk of death by 66%.

However, as this is merely a casual link, more research is clearly required. One researcher suggested that perhaps people following high protein diets also tend to consume less of other healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and legumes.
