Recent research has shown that frequent consumption of almonds can help to increase levels of HDL (‘good’) cholesterol.
In one study, researchers compared the HDL cholesterol levels of those eating almonds every day with those consuming no almonds. They found that not only did the HDL levels in those eating the almonds improve; the almonds helped to boost and enhance the function of the HDL cholesterol, whose job is to gather cholesterol from tissues and transport it out of the body.
Although almonds on their own are unlikely to eliminate the risk of heart disease, it would be advisable to add them into the daily diet, and perhaps substitute a midmorning biscuit with a handful of almonds instead.
